Tacoma is the largest city in and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington. It is located between Washington’s largest city, Seattle, and the state capital of Olympia. It is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third-largest city in the state. Approximately 207,000 people live in Tacoma, which serves as the business hub of the South Sound region.
Tacoma draws its name from the eponymous Native American names for Mt. Rainier, Takhoma, or Tahoma.
A Brief History
Tacoma was officially incorporated in 1875, though records of white settlement date back to the 1850s. The city was incorporated after it was chosen in 1873 to be the site of the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Tacoma won the deal over nearby Seattle due to its deep harbor Commencement Bay. Connecting the railroad to the state’s largest port cemented its status as the center of trade on the west coast. For this reason, Tacoma’s nickname is “the City of Destiny.”
Modern-Day Life in Tactown
These days, Tacoma is seeing a resurgence in vitality and restoration following a period of economic decline and crime in the 1980s and 1990s. The downtown and waterfront districts are attracting more visitors every year and luxury condos are popping up along the water at every turn.
Outdoor enthusiasts can take their pick of popular destinations, including one of the largest urban parks in the United States: Point Defiance Park. The Five Mile Drive runs through Point Defiance, offering stunning views of the Puget Sound, the Narrows Bridges, and seals and whales.
